New Tides Canada project: The Writers’ Exchange inspires Vancouver’s inner-city kids to love reading and writing
Most of us agree that literacy skills are essential to function in modern life. But the truth is that many kids don’t enjoy reading as much as they used to, and kids at inner-city schools in Vancouver are struggling.
The Writer’s Exchange is the only place in Vancouver where kids can work one-on-one with volunteer mentors and professional writers to boost their literacy skills and self-esteem through free homework help, dedicated reading time and creative writing projects.
By becoming a project of Tides Canada Initiatives’ shared platform, the Writer’s Exchange will have all the administrative supports they need, saving time and money for what matters most—the kids!
The Writers’ Exchange offers a wide range of programming including:
- creative writing workshops and free after-school tutoring
- quiet reading with mentors
- literacy games and activities during school breaks
Tides Canada welcomes The Writers’ Exchange into our community of almost 40 social change projects across the country. The project will further Tides Canada’s mission for social justice with its creative and inclusive approach to making reading and writing more accessible and enjoyable for kids living in the inner city.
We look forward to sharing the stories of our newest TCI initiative as we move forward – stories from the kids and of the project itself.
Please consider making a donation to The Writer’s Exchange to help project volunteers provide the best literacy programming to as many inner-city kids as possible.
