Our History

An Heiress’ Quest to Change the World

In 1989, a young Carol Newell, Tides’ founding donor, took a serious look at the state of the world.  She would soon come into a substantial inheritance from her family, whose company would later become the Newell Rubbermaid Corporation, and resolved to direct this wealth to change the world.

Carol assembled a team to help leverage her wealth to advance an environmentally sustainable and socially just world with a focus on British Columbia, a region she loved.

From this came the vision for a national public foundation that would work across Canada and focus on environmental and social justice issues. In December 2000, with a gift from Carol and a small group of philanthropists, Tides Canada Foundation started operations.

Began as an experiment, Tides is now a Canadian leader and innovator in philanthropy. To date, we have granted nearly $50 million to hundreds of charities and charitable initiatives.  We help donors and organizations increase their impact and solve urgent environmental and social justice problems as we work to make Carol’s vision a reality.

Carol was featured in BC Business Magazine’s article, ‘The Inheritance Problem’.
