Ilisaqsivik Family Resource Centre
Inuit health and wellness — “the people themselves know best”
Issue area: Community development, the Arctic
Where they work: Clyde River, Nunavut
The Inuit-run Ilisaqsivik Family Resource Centre is working to build a strong, healthy community in Clyde River, Nunavut. It offers a wide range of programs – from prenatal nutrition, to youth hip hop and on-the-land counselling – all designed to empower, connect and bring joy to the people of the community.
We chose them for:
- creating a place for the community in Clyde River to learn and be actively involved in Inuit culture, developing programs on the premise that “the people themselves know best.”
- engaging all parts of the community – from Inuktitut language classes, to Inuit youth summer work experience programs and traditional hunting training.
- teaching that wellness often begins with changes to one’s thinking and actions – with the goal to better relationships, with oneself, with family and with the community.
