Not Far From The Tree (NFFTT)

Recognizing the fruit tree, seeing the urban orchard

Issue area: Food, Community development
Where they work: Toronto

Not Far From The Tree has built a community around the activity of gleaning fruit in the urban environment. They have shifted the way people in Toronto see their city – from recognizing the fruit tree to seeing the urban orchard.

We chose them for:

  • building a win-win-win solution to share the wealth of Toronto’s urban fruit trees by picking and sharing the bounty: 1/3 goes to tree owners, 1/3 for the volunteers, and 1/3 is delivered by bicycle to local food banks, shelters, and community kitchens.
  • sowing the seeds for a great idea that is spreading across the world – NFFTT is now consulting on similar initiatives in France, New Zealand and the U.S.
  • creating community around the activity of gleaning and shifting the way people in Toronto see their city while increasing the efficiency of local food systems.
