Shorefast Foundation
New meaningful ways in an old continuity
Issue area: Community development, Arts and culture
Where they work: Fogo Island and Change Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador
A 45 minute ferry journey off the coast of Newfoundland, sit Fogo Island and Change Islands, some of the oldest settlements in Canada. On the islands, the Shorefast Foundation supports a diverse range of projects from responsible fishery, to the arts and local geo-tourism, enabling the community to find new meaningful ways in an old continuity.
We chose them for:
- believing there is a future for rural communities in Canada and that future is built on innovation, resilience, optimism and the ability to adapt.
- returning home — Shorefast was founded by Zita Cobb who grew up on Fogo Island and returned to partner with the people and invest in the islands through strategic philanthropy.
- undertaking projects built on social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial methods to create positive change with respect for local culture and heritage.
