Social Justice Fund

Social Justice is based on the concept that healthy societies rely on respect for human rights, cultural diversity, and the vitality of communities.

The Tides Canada Social Justice Fund brings donors together to support charities addressing the root causes of social and economic challenges of marginalized communities in Canada.

The fund was set up in 2006 with a $1 million challenge grant from Tides’ founding donor, Carol Newell, and the Endswell Foundation.

It offers donors an effective “one-stop” approach to social justice grant making focused on key issues such as homelessness and poverty, violence prevention, and building capacity for charities and non-profits.

Key highlights

To date, Tides’ Social Justice Fund has provided core support to Canadian Women’s Foundation and match grants for their British Columbia Violence Prevention grantmaking.

Tides also convened a Toronto Affordable Housing Working Group composed of key housing policy makers, practitioners and developers for a conversation on the negative trends linking housing and poverty. This created a valuable channel of communication between Toronto and Vancouver on housing policy issues.

Donors to the fund have enabled Tides to leverage an match grant of $300,000 for YWCA Toronto’s Elm Centre to help create 300 new units of affordable housing for women and their families in Toronto’s downtown core.
