Does a Hybrid Save Money? One Family Worked it Out

Posted on Apr 2, 2009

How much money does a hybrid vehicle save you?

That was exactly what Craig Henderson, of Naramata Conservation Society, asked himself over a  year ago. Instead of just mulling over the idea, he traded in their Honda CRV for a Toyota Prius hybrid, and started keeping track of the vehicle’s efficiency and fuel usage. His personal project work landed him an award as a LiveSmart BC Community Hero.

Labelling the Prius with a sign reading ‘Hybrid Analysis Project,’ Henderson decided to do a low-key analysis of how the hybrid performed under real-world conditions releasing the results of his analysis online through the Naramata conservation society’s website.

The car uses a combination of gasoline and electrical engines to power the vehicle, and over 30 thousand kilometres he saved $1750 dollars in fuel.

Henderson is project director for the Naramata Conservation Society, a Tides Canada project, and he saw the Prius as not only a more environmentally friendly vehicle, but also a way to raise awareness about alternative transportation.
