Girls Run Barefoot 14KM for Their Vilage

Posted on Apr 27, 2009

A new campaign of the African Rural Development Fund at Tides Canada has runners across Canada motivated to support a group of girls in Uganda who are running to raise money for children less fortunate than themselves.

Some 235 girls started an initiative last year, running 14 kilometres, most of them barefoot, to raise money for their local communities. They raised $1500, an extraordinary amount in an area where most people live on no less than $1 a day. In December 2009, 700 girls are planning to join in.

Runners4Runners is a program specifically asking people who run regularly, or who are inspired by this story, to consider supporting the girls who attend the  Uganda Rural Development Training Program.

“Games and sports enables a person to be flexible, tolerant, courageous and conscious about your purpose as a human being.  It also emphasizes leadership in all corners of life. I am now able to speak with no fear, and lead a group with justice -  sports has played such a big role in this.”

– URDT student Florence Ngonzi, age 15

"The sun was blazing hot. The roads were unpaved, pitted and rough. Most of the 235 girls ran the 14 kilometers barefoot because they couldn’t afford shoes."
