Jane’s Walks A Huge Success – Check Out the Photos

Posted on Apr 27, 2009

Passionate volunteers in 24 cities across Canada and an equal number in the US warmed up their vocal chords, strapped on their sneakers and toured strangers through the nooks and crannies of their neighbourhoods on May 2-3, stretching from Halifax to Vancouver, and beyond. To see photos from the tours cross Canada go to Jane’s Walk 09 on their Flickr site.

Jane’s Walk, or more appropriately ‘walks’, are organized every year by the Centre For City Ecology in Toronto, a Tides Canada project, and kicked off last weekend on May 2 and 3.

It’s a free event, run by people who have a special interest in their neighbourhood, who enjoy telling its stories, relaying the mythical and factual fables of its colourful characters and evolving history.

Jane’s Walk honours the legacy and ideas of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs who championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centered approach to planning. Jane’s Walk helps knit people together into a strong and resourceful community, instilling belonging and encouraging civic leadership.
