Call on Gov’t to Pass Climate Bill Before Summer
More than 30 Environmental organizations across Canada are calling on the Federal Government to pass Bill-C-311 before summer recess.
The bill will guarantee Canada sets science based climate reduction targets, and won support from a majority of Members of Parliament in mid 2008, but was not able to complete the legislative process due to an election being called late last year.
They argue that M.K. Jaccard and Associates, a prominent Canadian modeling firm, shows that Canada can reach a science-based emissions target in 2020 while growing its economy by 2% per year and creating over one million net new jobs
The letter also urges action on the bill ahead of the December climate negotiations in Copenhagen, where countries from around the globe will convene for negotiations on reduction targets post 2012, when the Kyoto Protocols first commitment period ends.
"…neither the bill itself nor the science underlying it has changed although the passage of time
has made it even more urgent." …to read the full letter
