Canadian Mining, Oil & Gas Companies to Clean Up Shop Overseas

Posted on Mar 3, 2009

Numerous studies have highlighted the significant environmental and human rights impacts of Canadian oil, gas and mining operations overseas.

The Halifax Initiative, a project of Tides Canada, applauds the filing of a new bill that seeks to ensure that corporations engaged in mining, oil or gas activities that receive government support "act in a manner consistent with international environmental best practices and Canada’s commitments to international human rights standards.”

Having consistently called for greater accountability of extractive industries overseas, the Halifax Initiative is pleased to see Liberal MP John McKay introduce the bill which also covers investments made by the Canada Pension Plan in extractive companies.
