Reel Youth Back with a Film from Nepal

Posted on Mar 10, 2009

It’s hard to imagine a situation where children have to join their parents in prison, because there’s no other place for them to go.

Reel Youth, a Tides Canada project, returned at the end of 08 from their second trip overseas. This time from the hills of Nepal, where they visited a special home caring for youth who had been forced into the Maoist Army, or left to fend for themselves when their parents were sent to jail.

Mark and Erica, the ReelYouth Directors, have brought us back the stories of children like Jeevan, a 14 year old boy whose father is in Kathmandu Prison for drug trafficking; a common means of survival in the hills of Nepal. When his mother was unable to support them both Jeevan had no choice but to live with his father in prison. Prisoners Assist (PA Nepal) offered him schooling and accommodation in a home they’d set up for other children like him.

The film will also introduce us to 18 year old Maya, who was forced into the Maoist army at 13 only to be captured  by the State Military and held in a detention centre. P.A.Nepal rescued her from the security forces and brought her to live in their Kathmandu Children’s Home.Read more about the children they met in Nepal

About REEL YOUTH INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

Nearly half of the world’s population are under 25 but their voices and their lives often go unheard. Reel Youth are trying to give them their voice by taking the camera to them, and teaching young people from across the globe to tell their own stories.
