Tides Canada appoints Catherine Emrick as Senior Associate, Aquaculture Innovation

Posted on Dec 10, 2009

Ross McMillan, President and CEO of Tides Canada, is pleased to announce that Catherine Emrick has joined Tides Canada as Senior Associate, Aquaculture Innovation. Through this newly created position, she will focus on advancing aquaculture solutions that protect wild salmon and the marine environment.

Previously the Program Director with the SOS Marine Conservation Foundation, Catherine helped to develop business-oriented solutions to the negative impacts of open net-cage finfish aquaculture and a strategy to build a sustainable aquaculture industry in BC.

In her new role, and as an ongoing member of the SOS Solutions Advisory Committee, Emrick will work in close collaboration with government, industry, environmental organizations and First Nations to explore and advance the adoption of closed containment production systems as a means to foster the environmental protection of wild salmon.

“With her practical and solutions-oriented approach, Catherine brings tremendous credibility to our goal of advancing new approaches to aquaculture that protect the marine environment and provide society with the benefits that are inherent in a healthy and sustainable aquaculture industry,” said McMillan.

Emrick will also continue to promote a more transparent and accountable regulatory regime for finfish aquaculture. This work is particularly important as the regulatory regime for finfish aquaculture shifts from the Province of British Columbia to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the federal judicial inquiry into the decline of sockeye salmon in the Fraser River in BC proceeds.

Catherine holds a law degree and MBA from the University of Calgary and is a Fellow of the Certified General Accountants Association. She has extensive experience in the areas of environmental and regulatory law, primarily in Northern Canada.
