World Water Monitoring Day

September 18, 2009

World Water Monitoring Day was started by the Water Environment Federation and the International Water Association to raise public awareness about protecting water resources around the world by engaging people to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies.

Tides Canada supports an effective and sustainable Canada-wide water strategy and wants to acknowledge two projects, FLOW and Waterlution, that are working hard to educate Canadians about water issues and protect our critical freshwater resources.

Waterlution is a water learning organization that brings together young leaders interested or working on water-related topics. Waterlution designs and delivers workshops, events and specialised projects that inspire individuals and groups to develop a shared understanding of their local ‘culture of water’ and the complex system in which it is embedded.

Their 2009 workshop series is currently underway.

FLOW promotes accountability for sustainable water management through outreach and communication. It is made up of a group of scientists, lawyers, policy experts, and former senior government policy advisors, as well as representatives of environmental organizations, including WWF-Canada, the University of Victoria’s POLIS Project on Ecological Governance, the Soil and Water Conservation Society, Nature Québec, and the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources.
