Canadian Youth Climate Coalition unite youth

Posted on Oct 28, 2009

The Canadian Youth Climate Coalition (CYCC), a Tides Canada project, organized Power Shift last weekend, which has been heralded as Canada’s largest youth conference on climate change.

The conference offered forums on a range of topics, including green jobs, lobbying, and the impact of climate change on poverty.

Read the Power Shift Blog for details on the successful week of activities including Fill the Hill on October 24th, a peaceful demonstration by over 3,000 youth on Parliament Hill.

National Director of the CYCC, Amber Church, blogged throughout the week and wrote about her reaction to a vocal protest on Monday the 26th inside the House of Commons during discussions over  Bill 311.

She makes it clear on her blog the CYCC did not direct, endorse nor organize protests inside the House of Commons.

The BIll calls for Canada to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 25 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80 per cent below 1990 levels by 2050. It also gives the government the authority to make regulations to meet the targets, including penalties for contravention.

CYCC is a non-partisan coalition demanding immediate and meaningful action on climate change by governmental and private sector leaders. Founding members include labour unions, indigenous groups, green energy groups, student unions, environmental groups, faith-based groups and more.
