Inspiring a new generation of leaders in the North.
Dene Nahjo is a new generation of leaders and community builders working to advance social and environmental justice for northern peoples and promote indigenous leadership. By living, learning, and celebrating our culture on the land through the guidance of elders, we strive to foster emerging leaders, strengthen relationships, and create long-term, positive change in the Canadian North.
With my new knowledge of tool-making and maintenance, I have gained not only new moose hide ninja skills, but also new responsibilities: to be a person that my community can rely on for help with tanning hides; to be a person who my friends and family can come to for help with their equipment; and to be generous with my time, patience, and what little wisdom I’ve come to acquire so far in my life.
What gets me excited about Dene Nahjo is seeing the powerfully positive response from community members that have had the opportunity to participate in our projects and how quickly this spreads back into the work they do in their communities. We have had more and more people over the past year reach out to us to see how they can become involved with what we are doing or how we can help support them to initiate similar work in their own communities.
I thank Dene Nahjo and all the work that they do. And I cannot wait to see this happen more often. Mussi Cho to Dene Nahjo for having this vision. I am grateful, for the wisdom, for the power, for the grace that our Northern women have. My life has changed. I feel proud, and humbled, and honored to be among these women who are making changes for our Northern communities.
