Conservation

The BC Marine Conservation Analysis
This project forms a part of Sage’s conservation program to help advance marine planning initiatives in British Columbia by identifying potential areas of high conservation value. This highly collaborative, science based analysis involves all the key stakeholders on the BC coast, including all levels of government.

Canadian Conservation Initiative
CCI is working primarily to expand the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park into the Flathead Valley of British Columbia as a part of the overall Yellowstone to Yellowknife strategy. In addition, work continues on the expansion of the Nahanni National Park, and on securing easements to ensure wildlife movement corridors on the BC side of the Crowsnest Pass.

ForestEthics Canada
ForestEthics Canada works to protect endangered forests by transforming the paper and wood industries in North America and by supporting forest communities in the development of conservation-based economies.

Pacific Wild Initiative
Pacific Wild Initiative works to achieve long term environmental protection for marine and terrestrial wildlife on Canada’s north Pacific coast. Utilizing the principles of conservation biology through field research, web based educational tools and other broad based education and community outreach projects, Pacific Wild Initiative works with existing environmental groups to raise awareness about the region. Specifically, Pacific Wild Initiative supports an initiative to build an interactive web portal using non-invasive video techniques to showcase coastal ecology.

Rainforest Solutions Project
Along with ForestEthics, RSP worked to secure protection of the Great Bear Rainforest on British Columbia’s coast. RSP works with a wide range of parties – including other environmental organizations, First Nations, forest companies and government – to secure protection of the temperate rainforests on British Columbia’s coast and to promote economic alternatives to industrial logging in the region. Their work involves research and negotiation to reach an agreement among the interested parties followed by implementation - which involves developing procedures, monitoring adherence and retraining participants.

Round River Canada
Along with ForestEthics and the Rainforest Solution Project, Round River was active in achieving the protection of the Great Bear Rainforest in 2006. RRC is active in the Taku River, Muskwa-Kechika Conservation Area and Northwest Territories. Round River Canada seeks strategic opportunities to advance the protection of natural and wild places and the viability of local communities by facilitating collaborative planning and resource management initiatives informed by conservation biology, traditional knowledge, and conservation-based economic development principles.

Island Conservation Canada
ICC is a science-driven project dedicated to preventing extinctions and protecting natural ecological and evolutionary processes on islands. The project integrates and applies research, priority setting, education, capacity building, conservation action, monitoring and evaluation.

Naramata Conservation Initiative
Located in the South Okanagan, BC, the Naramata Conservation Initiative works to conserve and encourage sustainable management of environmentally-sensitive wilderness areas and heritage legacies. The NCI also researches and encourages environmentally responsible methods of building construction.

Rivers Without Borders
Rivers Without Borders protects the diversity and abundance of fish and wildlife species and their habitat in the transboundary watersheds of Canada and southeast Alaska. RWB works with communities, scientists, First Nations, conservation allies and others and to encourage the adoption of long-term conservation-based planning to ensure the survival of these magnificent rivers systems.
