Tides Canada welcomes northerner Justin Ferbey to board
VANCOUVER, BC – Tides Canada today announced the appointment of Justin Ferbey to its board of directors. Ferbey is President of the Yukon Development Corporation with the Government of Yukon. Born and raised in the Yukon, he is a citizen of the Carcross Tagish First Nation and is the first northerner to join Tides Canada’s board.
“Justin’s entrepreneurial and business acumen is an asset to Tides Canada’s Board of Directors and our work to steer the organization forward on a path of sustainability and smart governance,” said Jodi White, Chair of the Board.
“I’m excited to be joining Tides Canada as it expands its programmatic focus in the North,” said Ferbey. “I’m looking forward to building on the solid and thoughtful work that Tides Canada has already undertaken to effect positive and durable economic, social, and environmental change in this dynamic region.”
As former Chief Executive Officer of Carcross Tagish Management Corporation, Justin Ferbey’s vision and leadership helped create sustainable jobs and opportunities for his community to reinvest in social, health, recreational, and educational services. In 2013, under his leadership, the corporation was named Innovator of the Year by the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon, an Innovator of the Year finalist in the Canadian Tourism Awards. The Corporation also received awards of recognition in both the Community and Individual Economic Development Officer categories of the Cando (Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers) Economic Developer of the Year Award.
“Tides Canada has a proven commitment to support indigenous and rural communities across the country as they address diverse challenges,” said Ross McMillan, President & CEO of Tides Canada. “Justin has deep knowledge of challenges faced by northerners and a successful track record in advancing integrated solutions in his community and beyond. I am thrilled to have such a reputable leader join our board.”
Ferbey is a federal appointee to the Joint Public Advisory Committee of the North American Agreement for Environmental Cooperation, and the president of Skookum Jim’s Friendship Centre. He was previously director of Yukon Energy Corporation, vice-chair of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, a federal fiscal advisor in the British Columbia treaty process, and an executive of the Carcross Tagish First Nation.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, an MBA from the University of Liverpool, and has specialized training in dispute resolution. He is a 2007 Action Canada Fellow and an alumnus of the US Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program (2013).
