Tides Canada welcomes Peter MacLeod to Board of Directors

Peter MacLeodToronto, ON – Jodi White, Chair of Tides Canada, today announced the appointment of Toronto-based citizen engagement expert, Peter MacLeod, to the organization’s Board of Directors. MacLeod is Principal and Co-founder of MASS LBP, an innovative consultancy based in Toronto that works with forward-thinking governments, corporations, and communities to deepen and improve public consultation and engagement.

Ms. White noted: “I first met Peter when he was visiting federal Member of Parliament constituency offices across the country during his Doctorate research, seeking to make sense of our democratic process and motivations.” Now a recognized pioneer and leader in effective public consultation, Mr. MacLeod represents a new generation of thought leaders in citizen engagement. His expertise and passion for engaging Canadians in important public policy debates will strengthen the ability of Tides Canada to effect positive social and environmental change. “We’re thrilled that Peter has agreed to volunteer his time, talent, and energy as a member of our Board,” added Ms. White.

Since founding MASS in 2008, Mr. MacLeod has led some of Canada’s most inventive and ambitious efforts to engage citizens in tackling tough policy challenges. He has also worked with leading organizations in North America and Europe, including Fast Company magazine, Vancouver’s Wosk Centre for Dialogue, Britain’s Demos think tank, and the Kaospilots, a Danish school for business design and social innovation.

“We’re excited about how Peter’s experience in deliberative democracy can help shape our work in building bridges between and among sectors as we seek to address pressing environmental and social problems in Canada,” said Ross McMillan, President & CEO of Tides Canada. “We’re looking forward to the fresh perspective that Peter brings to the Board and the Tides Canada changemaker community.”

A graduate of the University of Toronto and Queen’s University, Mr. MacLeod writes and speaks frequently about the citizen’s experience of the state, the importance of public imagination, and the future of responsible government.

“I’m delighted to be joining Tides Canada as it expands its work across the country and continues to build on its important legacy of original and impact-oriented investments that contribute to the prosperity, well-being, and environmental health of all Canadians. This is a next generation approach to philanthropy and nation-building,” said Mr. MacLeod.

Mr. MacLeod is an Action Canada fellow (2003), the 2008 recipient of the Public Policy Forum’s Emerging Leaders Award, and a director of Toronto’s Wellesley Institute for Urban Health. He is also the founding chair of the Wagemark Foundation, a philanthropic foundation that advocates to lower disparities between top and bottom earners within organizations.
